Double manning: driver cards and working time rules

Double manning means that two professional drivers operate the same truck and take turns driving during a journey. This system is widely used in international transport because it allows the vehicle to remain on the road for longer while still complying with EU driving and rest-time regulations.

When a vehicle is operated by two drivers, the daily working cycle is generally organised within a 30-hour period. During this time, both drivers must complete their duties and take the required daily rest.

How two-driver operation works

While one driver is driving, the second driver normally remains in the cab and waits for their turn. After a certain period, the drivers change positions.

In practice, the active working period may extend to around 21 hours, after which both drivers must take at least 9 consecutive hours of daily rest.

Having a second driver does not remove the individual limits on driving time. Each driver must still comply with their own rules on driving, breaks and rest.

How tachograph cards should be used

A digital tachograph has two card slots. The card of the person currently driving must be inserted into slot 1. The second driver’s card is placed in slot 2.

Whenever the drivers change seats, the cards must also be changed accordingly. The new driver places their card in slot 1, while the other driver’s card moves to slot 2.

Incorrect card placement may result in the tachograph recording driving time and other activities incorrectly.

Common mistakes in double manning

Frequent problems include selecting the wrong tachograph mode, failing to change the cards immediately or incorrectly recording periods spent in the passenger seat.

During roadside inspections, authorities may analyse data from both driver cards. An error made by one driver can therefore create problems for the whole crew.

When organised correctly, double manning can significantly improve delivery times on long-distance routes while keeping the operation compliant with EU rules.
